The three-phase approach outlined below is proposed to develop the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge. Total duration of the three phases is expected to be five years. These three phases have already produced the “Straw Man”, and will produce the “Stone Man” and “Iron Man” versions of the Guide.

A startup phase to develop an initial version of the Guide began at the outset of 1998 and was completed in September of 1998. The objectives of this phase were to define the strategy, to deliver what is referred to as the Straw Man version of the Guide, and to gather momentum in the profession for the project. The Stone Man phase, currently ongoing and involving a much larger group of contributors is scheduled to be completed by spring of 2000. A subsequent Iron Man version should be completed roughly three years after the Stone Man version.
